Texas Medical Center Helix Park: Campus Design
Houston, Texas
In collaboration with Elkus Manfredi Architects, the TMC3 Innovation Park is a collaborative research campus woven together by six interstitial gardens. The project’s proximity to Brays Bayou and its lying within the 500-year floodplain necessitated increasing water-holding capacity on site. This is supported by 11.5 acres of open space and a below-grade cistern capable of holding 2.3 million gallons of water.
Each garden, represented as a segment of a double helix strand, employs planting strategies inspired by eastern Texas ecoregions. Dynamic and ecologically valuable palettes like those proposed within the design have been demanded in recent times to return to the now urban landscape.
I researched Texas ecoregions as informed by geography and natural plant communities and worked with senior associates to develop tree and understory planting designs. I assisted in preparing construction documents for the project, a sheet set comprised of >150 sheets. I additionally traveled with senior associates to tag trees for the project during Construction Administration.
